Carbon Upcycling, in partnership with Ash Grove, a CRH company and pioneer in the North American cement industry, will deploy our first-of-its-kind commercial CUT CO₂ System at the Ash Grove Mississauga Cement Plant. Our technology will produce a high-quality supplementary cementitious material (SCM) from steel slag sourced from a nearby steel manufacturing facility, while permanently sequestering CO₂ emissions from the cement kiln. The low-carbon material will be used to reduce the clinker-to-cement ratio at the plant.

North American cement manufacturers depend heavily on imported SCMs, driving up costs and delaying critical infrastructure projects, including housing. As global cement demand rises, competition for SCMs intensifies.
Ash Grove establishes a resilient, domestic supply of SCMs in Canada to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, while directly contributing to Canada’s climate and clean manufacturing goals.
Carbon 1 Mississauga represents the successful commercialization of Canadian technology built by and for Canadians. Once operational in 2026, the facility will produce up to 30,000 tonnes of SCMs annually, reduce and avoid approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO₂, and create skilled jobs in Ontario.
