Carbon Upcycling’s CEO Apoorv Sinha named to Maclean’s 100 Most Influential Canadians

Carbon Upcycling’s Co-founder & CEO, Apoorv Sinha, has been recognized as a top 10 climate leader in Maclean’s Magazine’s Power List 2024.

Maclean’s described Apoorv as the one making concrete production more sustainable by enabling the industry to capture and use CO2 emissions and waste materials to create a low-carbon alternative to traditional cement.

The cement and concrete industry is responsible for about 8% of global emissions. If it were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter, trailing only China and the United States. The Global Cement & Concrete Association has declared this decade the “Decade to Deliver,” emphasizing the need to optimize cement processes and adopt low-carbon alternative materials to reduce baseline CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030.

Carbon Upcycling is at the forefront of cement decarbonization with two groundbreaking commercial carbon capture and utilization (CCU) projects at cement plants in the UK and Canada. The Canadian flagship project aims to capture CO2 emissions directly from flue gas and use it to transform waste steel slag into a high-performance substitute for cement. This project could reduce annual emissions by nearly 30,000 tonnes of CO2 while creating a robust, circular supply chain at Canada’s largest cement plant.

The Power List 2024 recognizes 100 Canadians who have significantly impacted their respective fields. It features influential Canadians from various sectors, including sports, education, healthcare, and business.
